Cancer is a disease that has affected almost everyone, either directly or indirectly. Through Unison’s origin and roots in the city of Port Moody, we’ve had the privilege of getting to know the Vassallo family throughout the years. At the young age of 34, Lina Vassallo was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a hard fought 4 year battle with cancer, Lina unfortunately passed away at the age of 38, leaving behind a husband and three children.

Since then, Lina’s friends and family in partnership with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, created the Lina’s Dream Endowment Fund with the aim of providing research scholarships towards the research of breast cancer. An annual golf and dinner event has been held every year since 2011 in order to raise funds and awareness of breast cancer as well as bring the community together for a common cause. Unison has been a proud supporter and sponsor of this event for the past several years, and with the help of the community, Lina’s dream has been able to raise a total of $430,000 to be used for research scholarships and help support the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

In 2016, it is estimated that 25,000 women and 220 men in Canada will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and that 5,000 women and 60 men will die from the disease. By supporting the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and Lina’s Dream, we hope that one day no one will have to go through the struggles of breast cancer.
